Deakin Business School’s Business Development Clinic (BDC) has been named a finalist for the prestigious ACEN 2024 Innovation and Excellence Award, a testament to its impactful work-integrated learning (WIL) initiative. This accolade recognises exceptional quality and innovative WIL practices across a diverse range of disciplines, methods, and models. The winners of the ACEN Awards were announced during the ACEN 2024 Conference, held in Sydney on October 21–22, 2024.

Bridging Academia and Industry
The BDC bridges the gap between academic learning and industry application, providing Deakin students with an invaluable opportunity to work directly with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The clinic utilises the “7 Levers” strategic planning framework, guiding students to deliver actionable business strategies aimed at accelerating SME growth. Over an intensive eight-week period, student teams work closely with businesses, analyzing their operations, identifying key opportunities, and crafting comprehensive plans that help drive profitability and growth.

Creating Impactful Outcomes
Through the BDC, students not only enhance their employability with real-world consulting experience, but they also contribute significantly to SMEs, many of which report tangible profit growth following the implementation of students’ strategies. The program empowers both students and business owners, with SMEs gaining insights and tools they may not otherwise afford, while students develop skills and confidence that boost their career prospects.

Expanding Reach and Influence
The clinic’s impact extends beyond the local community, with plans for international expansion. The program’s success has already resulted in collaborations with global partners, and the development of an advanced postgraduate program is set to further elevate its reach and influence.
