Deakin University’s Business Development Clinic (BDC) continues to make a significant impact on small businesses by bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Each trimester the BDC provides students a for-credit ‘industry experience’ in which they work with an owner/manager to develop a strategic perspective of their business. One recent success story is the collaboration between BDC’s consultancy team and Image to Brand Photography, led by founder Ric Gentiluomo.
Ric’s feedback underscores the professionalism and innovative thinking that Deakin’s students bring to the project, emphasising the value of having a “fresh set of eyes” on his business.
“I’m so grateful for being part of this project. All the students were wonderful to deal with and it was great to get a fresh set of eyes (and ideas) on the business. As you know, when you’ve worked at something for so long, you tend to become a bit complacent and you tend to get set in your ways. Being able to listen to fresh ideas and a different point of view was enlightening for me and the business.”
The consultancy team, comprised of Hardy, Allen, Leaklyta, Anh, and Gia, employed the 7 Levers Framework to conduct an in-depth analysis of Ric’s business. Through this structured approach, they delivered strategy-informed recommendations focused on increasing customer retention and transaction frequency. One standout suggestion was the introduction of recurring service packages and targeted promotions aimed at enhancing client loyalty and attracting new business.
Ric appreciated the team’s ability to present these ideas professionally and translate them into actionable tactics, highlighting the importance of effective communication in today’s business world.
“Having run the business for so many years, I feel that the one thing that is lacking by many businesses is how they communicate with their clients. If the team carries this with them into their professional lives after graduating, they’ll already be one big step ahead than a lot of businesses operating today. “
This collaboration not only benefited Ric’s business but also provided invaluable hands-on experience for the students, showcasing the mutual value of academic-industry partnerships.
Deakin’s BDC offers small business owners like Ric the opportunity to gain new perspectives while supporting the professional growth of tomorrow’s business leaders. For small businesses seeking fresh strategies and expert consultancy, Deakin’s Business Development Clinic is an ideal partner.
